Campau, Joseph, 1769-1863.

Born in Detroit on Feb. 25, 1769, Joseph Campau was a trader with Native Americans when still a boy. He increased his fortunes by dealing in real estate until he retired from active work in 1837. Among the positions he held in early Detroit, Campau was a prominent politician, trustee of the Village of Detroit, assessor, appraiser, overseer of the poor and city treasurer. He served as captain and major of the militia. He died in Detroit in 1863.
