Born in Oranage County, New York on Mar. 1, 2804, Isaac S. Smith was the son of Dr. Elisha and Abigail Smith. He married Hannah A. Fleming on May 3, 1827, and after her death in 1829, he married Julia Anne Clark on December 1, 1830. Smith studied medicine with his father and graduated from the Medical College of the University of the State of New York in 1840, where he later became an instructor. In 1842 Dr. Smith was a lecturer at the University of the City of New York. In 1850 he made a voyage around Cape Horn to San Francisco as surgeon of the vessel Northerner. He settled in Gross Pointe, Mich., where he died on Sept. 13, 1886.
