First service club for executive and professional women; founded 11 Apr. 1917 in Nashville, Tenn.; the club was organized within days of the entry of U.S.A. into World War I in order to unite women to organize for service on the home front; in 1919 name changed to National Association of Altrusa Clubs; in 1935 became International Association of Altrusa Clubs; in 1947 became Altrusa International; chapter in Columbia, S.C., organized in May 1940.
