Samuel F. Pogue was a professor of music at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He was active in the Cincinnati Musical Festival Association (May Festival) and served as its president in 1973. In August 1978, he was named the chairman of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra conductor search. Michael Gielen was chosen as the new conductor. Jesus Lopez Cobos, a later Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra conductor, was one of the conductors considered during the search.
