Mollie Mollerud was born on September 5, 1874 in Goodhue County, Minnesota. Her parents, Lars and Ingeborg Hegseth Paulsness, emigrated from Norway in 1860 and farmed in Goodhue County until Lars died in 1889. Ingeborg and her five children then moved to Grafton, North Dakota, where they homesteaded. In November 1893, Mollie, the oldest daughter, married Hans Mollerud, who was born in Sigdal, Norway in 1870. The Molleruds worked on Ingeborg's farm until 1903, when they homesteaded near Hanley, Saskatchewan. The Molleruds had ten children: Hilda, Inez, Leonard, Freemann, Alvin, Henry, Henrietta, Melville, and two boys who died in infancy.
