Public education administrator Gonzalo Garza was born in New Braunfels, Texas in 1927. His parents were Mexican American migrant workers. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps (1944-1946, 1951), Garza went on to complete his M.S. in Education from St. Mary's University (1954) and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin (1976). Garza had a distinguished career in public education in Central Texas, holding administrative positions in Corpus Christi Independent School District, Houston Independent School District, Eagle Pass Independent School District, San Marcos Consolidated School District, and Austin Independent School District before retiring from education administration in 1992. He received multiple awards for his service in public education, particularly his commitment to furthering education for Mexican American youth. In 1999, Gonzalo Garza Independent High School in AISD was named in his honor.
