George C. Boldt was born in 1851 at Dammgartin, on the island of Rugen, in the Baltic Sea. After coming to the United States and working in New York State, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, during which time he opened the Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia, he also managed others in Philadelphia and New Jersey. In 1890 he became proprietor and manager of the Waldorf Hotel in New York City, which opened in 1893. He joined his family in Alexandria Bay, N.Y. in July of 1893; from 1895 until his wife, Louise Augusta Boldt, died in 1904 he had a summer cottage constructed. After her death he never returned to Alexandria Bay.
