Served as an enlisted man in the National Guard and as an officer during World War I and World War II in Europe, with the 3rd Division, the 6th Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces. Served with the 4th Engineers, instructor of Engineer Reserve Officers, II Corps Area; Corps of Engineers, V Army Corps and organized Corps Tank Destroyer Force. Married Helen Besler, who served in Europe during 1918-1919 as an entertainer sponsored by the American Expeditionary Forces and the National War Work Council of the Young Men's Christian Association.
