Joshua Chamberlain, Jr., born in Orrington, Maine in 1800, married Sarah Brastow of Holden, Maine, in 1827. They had five children: Joshua Lawrence, Horace B., Sarah B., John Calhoun and Thomas Davee Chamberlain. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (1828-1914) graduated from Bowdoin College in 1852, studied at Bangor Theological Seminary, then returned to Bowdoin as a professor. He joined the 20th Maine Regiment in 1862, achieved fame at the Battle of Gettysburg, and was wounded at Petersburg. He served as governor of Maine, 1866-1869, and as president of Bowdoin, 1871-1883. Horace B. Chamberlain (1834-1861) graduated from Bowdoin in 1857 and practiced law in Bangor. Sarah B. Chamberlain (b. 1836) married Charles O. Farrington, a merchant in Brewer, Maine, in 1867. John Calhoun Chamberlain (1838-1867) graduated from Bowdoin in 1859 and from Bangor Theological Seminary in 1864. He served in the U.S. Christian Commission and was chaplain of the Eleventh Volunteers in the Civil War. Thomas Davee Chamberlain (1841-1896) was also a soldier in the Civil War, serving in the 20th Maine Regiment.
