Commonwealth Mine.

Hide Profile

The Commonwealth Mine in Pearce, Arizona was discovered in 1895 by John Pearce. By 1905, the high grade silver and gold had played out; D.T. Swatling and A.Y. Smith then leased the tailings. In 1910, the Montana Tonopah Mines Company bought the mine; two of the officers were Charles E. Knox and A.Y. Smith. Smith then leased the mine under the name of the Commonwealth Development Company, an outgrowth of the Worlds Fair Mine Development Company. During the 1930s and 1940s, the mine was controlled by Fred and Thomas F. Cole. It closed in the 1940s.
