Charles Dole was born in Northfield, VT, 22 October 1843. He graduated with the NU Class of 1869. From 1871 to 1886 he served as Professor of English Literature. Charles Dole was elected Secretary of the Faculty in 1881, alumni member of the Board of Trustees in 1889, and acting president of NU in 1895 and served until President Allan Brown was elected in 1896. Charles Dole was twice married, first to Mary I. Gilman (d.1887) in 1870, by whom he had four children. He married Clara A. McClearn in 1893 and the couple had two children.
