The company was incorporated in 1892, as a West Virginia corporation, to carry on the work of a previously incorporated (1890) Maryland company, the North Star Iron Company of Baltimore County. It owned 18,400 acres of iron ore land in northern Minnesota, and its principal shareholders were the North Star Construction Company (a GN subsidiary) and the Merritt brothers (Duluth). It functioned as a holding company for the assets of five operating companies: Minawa Iron Company, Minosin Iron Company, Nibiwa Iron Company, Wabigon Iron Company, and Wenona Iron Company. GN's holdings in the enterprise were eventually folded into the Great Northern Iron Ore Properties.
