Lawyer and judge of Concord, Mass. Born (July 26, 1824) and died (Sept. 22, 1893) in Concord. Son of lawyer Nathan Brooks and Mary (Merrick) Brooks. Educated in Concord by Phoebe Wheeler, Phineas Allen (at Concord Academy), William Whiting, Jr., C.C. Shackford, and John and Henry David Thoreau (at Concord Academy), and in Waltham by Samuel and Sarah Alden (Bradford) Ripley. Graduated from Harvard College in 1844, from Harvard Law School in 1847. Admitted to bar in 1847 in Lowell, where he joined Hopkinson & Ames. Returned to Concord to open office in Concord Bank building.

(Cont.) Politically active as a Whig and, later, a Republican. Member of the Massachusetts Legislature; elected Representative to Congress in 1869, reelected in 1870. Made Middlesex County Judge of Probate in 1872, resigning his seat in Congress to take the position. Served Concord as Chairman of Selectmen, Trustee of Town Donations, Treasurer of the Concord Free Public Library Corporation, and Moderator of Town Meeting. Director of Middlesex Mutual Fire Insurance Company; President of Middlesex Institution for Savings. In 1850, married Abba Maria Wood Prescott, who died in 1851.
