Lowinger, Paul, 1923-
Variant namesLowinger was born in Chicago in 1923. After serving in World War II, earning his medical degree, and working for the U.S. Public Health Service in New Orleans, he became a professor of psychiatry at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. He received a diploma from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1956.
In the 1960s, Lowinger became involved in a variety of liberal movements. He was active in the American Psychiatric Association (APA), the Radical Caucus of the APA, Physicians for Social Responsibility, and the Medical Committee for Human Rights (MCHR). Lowinger was also involved in prison reform, and he followed many of the important court cases of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Walter Lear was the founder of the Institute of Social Medicine and Community Health.
