Migrated to Tasmania 1834, settled in Melbourne 1847, partner in firm Lyall, Mickle and Bakewell 1851. Acquired a number of stations, mainly in Westernport region. Noted breeder of cattle and horses. Member of Victorian Legislative Assembly, President of Cranbourne Shire Council, President of Mornington Pastoral and Agricultural Company. His daughter married Ernest Ricardo.
