Tarabochia, Dominic J.

Hide Profile

Gig Harbor entrepreneurs, Dominic "Nick" Joseph Tarabochia (1907-1992) and Rose Josephine Ancich Tarabochia (1912-2008), were first generation Slavonian Americans who were a prominent part of the Puget Sound fishing industry. Nick was the son of a fisherman who emigrated from Susak island (part of present day Croatia) and settled in Brookfield, Washington. The family relocated to Gig Harbor around 1925 in hope of improved economic opportunities. In 1931, Nick married Rose Ancich, a Gig Harbor native, who also was the daughter of a fisherman who had emigrated from (what at the date on which her oral history was collected) Yugoslavia. Nick Tarabochia became successful as a commercial fisherman, eventually becoming the captain of his own boat by 1942. The couple also invested in real estate, acquiring property in Gig Harbor, which included the Neptune Court downtown retail complex and residential developments on Tarabochia Street, as well as land in Friday Harbor and other towns in Washington State.
