Shonnard was a prominent 20th century artist and sculptor who lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for much of her life. She bequeathed all of her material possessions to the Museum of New Mexico.

Eugenie Frederica Shonnard (4-29-1886 to 4-5-1978) was born in Yonkers, New York, the youngest of five children, to Frederic Shonnard and Eugenie Smyth Shonnard. Eugenie successfully completed her elementary and secondary education in Yonkers' public schools and began to study graphics at the New York School of Applied Design for Women where she studied under Alphonse Mucha, the Czechoslovakian artist who popularized "Art Nouveau." Eugenie received her first formal training in sculpture from James Earl Fraiser at the Art Students League in New York. Shortly after the death of her father in 1911, Eugenie and her mother moved to Paris in order that the young sculptress might study with August Rodin and Emile Bourdelle. Eugenie and her mother left France at the beginning of World War I and took up private and professional residence in New York City. In the spring of 1925, Eugenie and her mother came to Santa Fe on the invitation of Edgar L. Hewett. Eugenie and her mother moved permanently to Santa Fe in 1927.

Eugenie married Edward Gordon Ludlam, a civil engineer and entrepreneur, in Santa Fe on 26 July 1933. On 13 October 1955, Eugenie lost her husband after an extended illness. Eugenie died in Santa Fe just shy of her ninety-second birthday.
