The National Safety Committee of the United Steelworkers of America formed in 1950 and by 1954 was renamed the National Safety and Health Committee and by 1956 it had become the International Safety and Health Department. By the 1960s it was called the Safety and Health Department and around 1991 it was renamed the Health, Safety, and Environment Department.
