Ypsilanti Regional Psychiatric Hospital (Mich.)

Hide Profile

The Michigan State Legislature authorized Ypsilanti State Hospital in 1929. Admitted first patients in 1931. The facility's name was changed to the Ypsilanti Regional Psychiatric Hospital in the late seventies (c. 1978). The state hospital was placed under the jurisdiction of the Michigan Department of Mental Health in 1945. Executive Order 1996-1 created the Michigan Department of Community Health. Under this Executive Order, the Michigan Department of Public Health and the Michigan Department of Mental Health were consolidated along with several other health care related agencies and offices. Consequently, the extant state hospitals and the archives of closed facilities were placed under the jurisdiction of the new department. The Ypsilanti Regional Psychiatric Hospital closed in 1991. All of the hospital buildings were demolished by c. 2006.
