Raymond Shove was born September 20, 1906 in Howard, South Dakota. He received a B.A. in literature from Morningside College (1928) and a B.S. in library science (1930) and an M.A. in library science (1937) from the University of Illinois.
After working several years as an assistant in the Acquisitions Department of the University of Illinois Library, Professor Shove was appointed head of library acquisitions at the University of Minnesota Libraries in 1937. He became an assistant professor in the University’s library school in 1945 and was promoted to full professor in 1965. He retired from the University of Minnesota in 1975.
He served on the American Library Association Council (1954-1956) and chaired the Association of American Library Schools Committee on Archives (1964-1970). Professor Shove’s research included investigations of printing, publishing, and bookselling in the United States in the nineteenth century.
Raymond Shove died November 28, 2001.
