Hide Profile

The Editorial Services Department was part of the Communication Division of the Home Mission Board and produced Home Missions magazine and missions study books and tracts. The Department distributed these materials through bookstores owned and operated by the Baptist Sunday School Board. The mission study books were produced annually, the study books centered on a theme chosen by a committee, and was often similar to a theme used by other Protestant denominations. These books targeted different age groups: adults, youth, intermediate, juniors, and primaries. John L. Caylor served as secretary of the department and editor of Home Missions for 1945-1959, and Walker L. Knight succeeded Mr. Caylor in 1960 following his retirement. Mr. Knight was editor of Home Missions from 1959-1983, and incorporated many social issues such as race and gender into the magazine. C. William Junker took over as director following the resignation of Mr. Knight in 1983.
