Conference for the Reduction and Limitation of Armaments (1932-1934 : Geneva, Switzerland)
Variant namesThe Conference was initiated by the League of Nations, partly as a result of the 1928 Kellogg-Briand Pact, which had condemned the use of force to resolve disputes. The Conference discussed the question of universal reduction and limitation of all types of armaments. More than 60 governments sent representatives. After long negotiations and many proposals, the conference was dissolved in deadlock. (C.f. World Encyclopedia of Peace, entry for World Disarmament Conference). Although formally called the Conference for the Reduction and Limitation of Armaments, it was often known as the World Disarmament Conference. Among American attendees were Dr. Mary Emma Wooley and Senator Claude A. Swanson; U.S. organizations represented included the National Council for the Prevention of War, the Committee on the Cause and Cure of War, and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.
