Marriott Brosius was born in Colerain Township, Lancaster County, Pa. on Mar. 7, 1843. He attended the common schools and Thomas Baker's academy in Colerain Township. In October of 1861, he enlisted as a private in Company K, 97th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was severely wounded at Green Plain, Va. and was honorably discharged in Dec. 1864. He was later commissioned a second lieutenant for bravery on the field of battle. After the war, he attended Millersville Normal School (1865-1866) and the law school at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (1867-1868). He was admitted to the bar in 1868 and commenced practice in Lancaster County. He was elected as a Republican to the 51st Congress and to the six succeeding Congresses, serving from Mar. 4, 1889 until his death in Lancaster on Mar. 16, 1901.
