Helmut Liedloff was born January 5, 1930 in Bremen, Germany and both taught and recieved degress from Southern Illinois University. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in German and English from Philipps-Universität, Marburg, Germany in 1956, and did further study in English at Southern Illinois University from 1957 to 1958 going on to earn a Master of Arts in English from Southern Illinois University in 1962.

Dr. Liedloff was an Instructor in German and English as a Second Language at Gymnasium Hamburger Strasse, Bremen, Germany in 1957. From 1958 to 1959 he taught German at Milwaukee Downer College, Milwaukee, Wisconsin before being appointed Assistant Professor of German at Southern Illinois University from 1959 to 1964. He served as Associate Professor of German from 1964 to 1974 and Professor of German from 1975 until his retirement in 1992. From 1981 until 1987 he was also Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. A sabbatical from fall 1979 to spring 1980 took him back to Bremen, Germany where he taught English as a Foreign Language at Gymnasium Horn and German as a Foreign Language at the University of Bremen.Dr. Liedloff's interests and specialties included German language, culture, and folklore; post-medieval German literature; English-German translation and translation theory; German common culture and language; and language teaching. His writings include co-authorship of several German language textbooks (which are included in this collection); numerous professional articles dealing with the teaching of German and German culture; and a monograph entitled Steinbeck in German Translation: A Study in Translational Practices.
