The federal Office of Price Administration operated a Connecticut office through its New England regional headquarters from December 1941 to the fall of 1945. Chester Bowles became State Director on May 13, 1942. The Federal Government established the Office of Price Administration in August 1941 to aid in stabilizing prices, obtaining adequate production of essential items and preventing a post-war price collapse. It operated largely through rationing materials in short supply, establishing price and rent ceilings, and providing extensive public information services. For example, the Education Services Officer made presentations to high school home economics and civics classes regarding rationing and price controls.
