Claflin College's first library, Lee Library, was erected in 1898; as the collection grew, larger quarters became necessary and the library moved into a renovated building and was renamed Bowen Library, in honor of Bishop J.W.E. Bowen; in 1967 a new library building was erected and the library was renamed the H.V. Manning Library in honor of Claflin's sixth president, Hubert Vernon Manning.
