Born in Cuba in 1952, Juan Abreu specialized in painting and sculpture at Havana's San Alejandro School of Fine Arts before leaving Cuba in the Mariel boatlift of 1980. His earliest published works were A MI GUÍA, A MI GUÍA (1967), a collection of children's stories, and EL GIGANTE TRAGACEIBAS (1968), a children's novel. Later works include A LA SOMBRA DEL MAR: JORNADAS CUBANAS CON REINALDO ARENAS (1998), GARBAGELAND (2001), and CINCO CERVEZAS (2004).
