Barbara Johnes Brenner worked as a copywriter, artist's agent, freelance writer, writer-consultant, and college instructor during her career. Among her awards are the New York Herald Tribune Children's Spring Book Festival honor book (1961), the Washington Post Book World Spring Book Festival honor book (1970), the New York Times best children's books list (1970) and the ALA Notable Book citation (1970, 1977). The National Science Teachers Association and the Children's Book Council honored her in 1974, 1975, 1977, 1979, 1980. She was named an Outstanding Pennsylvania Author (1986), and won an Edgar Allan Poe award nomination (1988).
