Azalia Emma Peet was born in Rochester, NY, in 1887. She graduated from Smith College in 1910 and received her MA from Boston University in 1923. She served as a Christian missionary in Japan from 1916 to 1954 with the exception of furloughs in the US and for the period during World War II. During this latter period she lived with the Japanese confined to internment camps in Gresham and Nyssa, Oregon, and in Wapato, Washington. She was among the first women to be asked to return to Japan when the war was over. Peet was awarded the "Fifth Order of the Sacred Treasure" by the Japanese government in 1953. She retired in 1955 and died in 1973 in Asheville, NC.
