Conservation and the Environment became a formal program area of The Pew Charitable Trusts (PCT) in 1984. In 1986, PCT convened its first advisory committee for this program. This committee had representatives from corporate, academic, and scientific communities. The mission of the Conservation and Environment Program was defined as promoting policies and practices that were concerned withi the development of special initiatives and strategic coalitions to inform the public about environmental problems. Program initiatives focused on protecting forests and wilderness areas on public lands, land management, planning, and public education.
