Located at 15 East 97th Street, the Cathedral was built 1901-1902. It became the administrative headquarters of the North American Diocese in 1905. In 1926 the Cathedral was taken over by the Living Church schismatics headed by John S. Kedrovsky. Since 1945 it has been under the administration of the Patriarchate of Moscow, and since the grant of autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in America in 1970, it has been the permanent representative of the Russian Church to the American Church. The Cathedral has been designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Commission.
