Annie E. Scott, a Virginia schoolteacher in the late 1880s and early 1890s, was born ca. 1871, the daughter of Thomas and Judith Scott . She spent her late teens and early twenties as an elementary-school teacher in Powhatan and Cumberland counties, Virginia . During that time she was engaged in correspondence with both female and male friends. Letters from her female friends detail teaching experiences, courtship, and social events. Her male correspondents are nearly all aspiring suitors.
AES married Linnie Whitlock of Tobaccoville, Virginia. The date of their marriage is unknown. It is clear, however, from letters dated in late 1896 that AES was a new mother when she died at the age of twenty-five.
