The University Club was organized in 1917 to encourage the social interests of female faculty, administrative staff, graduate students and alumnae of the University of Iowa by offering programs and sponsoring interest groups. In 1979 membership was opened to any woman interested in the club and the University of Iowa. The University's Newcomers Club, an organization for wives of new faculty members, became an affiliate in 1962. Popular activities of the club's early years included bridge lessons and tournaments. In the 1940s club members occupied themselves with World War II defense activities. In the 1950s the club became involved in welcoming and entertaining foreign students. In 1943 the club published its first yearbook and in 1963 resumed its newsletter (not published since 1943). The "new" newsletter title is The University Club Clarion.
