St 1894, c 458 established the Board of Registration in Medicine to qualify physicians and surgeons to practice in Massachusetts and to investigate complaints against them. St 1919, c 350, ss 63-64 placed the board within the Division of Registration (until 1969, part of the Dept. of Civil Service and Registration). St 1975, c 362 (effective Jan. 1976) replaced it with the Board of Registration and Discipline in Medicine; St 1979, c 58 renamed the body once again the Board of Registration in Medicine.
St 1909, c 526 extended the board's jurisdiction to osteopaths, who were allowed to qualify to practice under restrictions. St 1936, c 247 also gave the board power (revoked by St 1971, c 662) to approve colleges, universities, and medical schools in the Commonwealth as institutions whose graduates could be considered for board qualification. St 1951, c 656 gave the board responsibility for registering physical therapists, a function transferred by St 1982, c 667 to the Board of (on) Allied Health Professions, currently known as the Board of Registration of Allied Health Professions. The board currently approves schools for training medical laboratory technologists (St 1955, c 759, s 1) and for training medical X-ray technicians (St 1957, c 655, s 1), and appoints a committee to register and license acupuncturists (St 1985, c 759, s 1)
