At the time of the earthquake in 1906, Plachek was working for the city of Chicago in the architecture department. A week after the disaster, Plachek and a group of other architects were sent to San Francisco to study the effects of fire and earthquakes on buildings. Plachek stayed in the Bay Area a number of months before returning to Chicago to make his report. He later returned to California where he worked for the state for about four years. In 1912 he set up an architectural practice in Berkeley, and designed numerous residences and commercial buildings until his death in 1948.
