Variant namesFrancis Gladden Bishop was born Jan. 19, 1809 to Isaac Gates and Mary Hyde Bishop in Livonia, New York. In 1832 he converted to Mormonism, but later broke away to form his own short-lived Church of Jesus Christ of New Jerusalem. Although excommunicated from the Mormon Church, he continued to write and preach on his interpretation of Mormonism. He moved to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1864 and died there in November during a scarlet fever outbreak.
