John Arthur Giles Gere (1921-1995) was a British art historian and connoisseur of Italian sixteenth-century drawings. Educated at Winchester and Balliol, he became Assistant Keeper in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum in 1946, and served as Keeper from 1973 to 1981.
He complied, with Philip Pouncey, two important catalogs of drawings: Drawings by Raphael, published in 1962, and Artists working in Rome ca. 1550-ca. 1640 .
Gere wrote a series of articles on Taddeo Zuccaro in the Burlington Magazine, leading to catalogs, exhibitions, and his monograph, Taddeo Zuccaro: His development studied in his drawings (1969). [See Nicholas Penny's obituary, Burlington Magazine, vol. 137, No. 1106 May 1995, pp. 319-321.]
