Robert P. Thompson was born in Pennsylvania in 1923 and enlisted in the Army at Fort Meade, Pa. in 1943. At the time of enlistment he was unmarried, and attending Penn State University. Thompson joined the 10th Mountain Division where he was assigned to Company B of the 86th Infantry Regiment. He served at Camp Hale, Colo., and Camp Swift, Tex. before being sent to Italy. Thompson was awarded the Silver Star Medal for heroism near Pizzo di Campiano in February 1945.
