Ellin Mackay Berlin was a novelist and wife of the songwriter Irving Berlin. She was the daughter of Clarence and Katherine Mackay. Her father made his fortune from Postal Telegraph Company, the International Telephone and Telegraph Company, mining and several other inherited interests; her grandfather, John W. Mackay, an Irish immigrant made fortunes from the Comstock Lode. Her mother was a writer. Ellin herself was a successful writer.
