Conrad Taeuber was born June 15, 1906, in Hosmer, South Dakota, a son of Richard E. and Emmy Mussgang Taeuber. He married Irene Barnes on June 26, 1929, who died in 1974. He married Dorothy Harris on September 10, 1979, who died in 1998. He received an A.B. in 1927, an M.A. in 1929, and a Ph.D. in 1931 from the University of Minnesota. From 1931 to 1933, he was an assistant professor at Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts. In 1934, he joined the federal government and worked as an associate economic analyst for the Federal Emergency Relief Administration until 1935; and, between 1935 and 1946, an agricultural economist, senior social scientist, principal social scientist and acting head of division of farm population and rural welfare, and finally head agricultural economist with the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. He then served between 1946 and 1951, as chairman of statistics branch with the Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations, Washington, D.C. He joined the Bureau of the Census in April 1951, serving as Assistant (April 1951 to March 1968) and later Associate Director for Demographic Fields (March 1968 to January 1973). During his tenure, he directed the 18th and 19th censuses in 1960 and 1970. He retired from the Bureau of the Census in 1973 and became associate director and Joseph F. Kennedy Sr. Professor of Demography at the Kennedy Institute of Georgetown University. He died September 11, 1999, in Nashua, New Hampshire.
