Mayor, John Eyton Bickersteth
Variant namesJohn Eyton Bickersteth Mayor (1825-1910), classical scholar and divine, was born at Baddegama, Ceylon, on 28 January 1825. He attended Christ's Hospital, 1833-1836, and Shrewsbury School, 1838-1844, and entered St John's College, Cambridge, in 1844 (B.A., 1848), where he became a Fellow in 1849. He was Master of Marlborough College, 1849-1853. Mayor became a classical tutor at St John's in 1853. He was University Librarian, 1864-1867, and Professor of Latin, 1872-1910. He died in Cambridge on 1 December 1910.
