John S. Kidder was born on February 20, 1830 in England. His family immigrated to the state of New York in the early 1840s. He settled in Laurens, Otsego County, N.Y. with his wife Harriet (Matteson) Kidder in 1854. John S. Kidder was Captain of Company I of the 121st Regiment of New York Volunteers during the U.S. Civil War, from 1862 to 1865. He was a carriage maker before and after the war, until 1879. Kidder then became a Port Warden in New York City, a job he held from 1880 to 1901. He died on May 19, 1905 in Laurens.
