Thomas Byrd Stewart was born in Seattle on January 1, 1919 and enlisted in the Army as a private in April 1941. He was later received an Captain's commission after completing officer candidate training at Ft. Benning, Ga. in April 1942. Stewart served as company commander for the Headquarters Company of the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment. He participated in the Kiska invasion and the Italian Campaign. During combat operations in Italy he was awarded both the Bronze Star Medal and the Silver Star Medal. He died in Juneau, Alaska on December 12, 2007.
