In 1821, Thomas Youngs Ayer (b.1795) married Abigail Whittlesey in Saybrook, Conn.; their eldest son, John (born c.1824), was listed in the 1850 census of Saybrook, Conn., with the occupation of "Californian"; date of letter is uncertain but presumably dates to mid 1840s.
