Grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. Graduated from Johns Hopkins University after a World War II military interruption. Taught in both private and public schools. In 1955, founded Colorado Academy in Denver, a coeducational country day school. Also founded Colorado Outward Bound School. In 1970, started Copper Mountain Ski area. Remained partner and director until it was sold in 1980. Executive director and trustee of Gates Family Foundation.
