Ross served in Company C of the 723rd during World War II. In 1924, the 614th Railway Engineer Battalion, a reserve unit, was organized. It was redesignated as the 614th Engineer Battalion in 1933. On Feb. 21, 1941 it was again redesignated as the 723rd Railway Operating Battalion (ROB). The Battalion was ordered into active service in Dec. 1943 and deactivated on Jan. 3, 1946 at Camp Kilmer (N.J.). During World War II it had occupation duty in Germany, May 2-Oct. 30, 1945. It was the first ROB to enter Germany as a complete unit, consisting of companies A-C. After the war it was reactivated from 1947 to 1951. (Information from website.).
