William Edward Sackville-West (1830-1905), was a lieutenant colonel in the grenadier guards and a prominent citizen in Bangor, north Wales towards the end of the nineteenth century. He was involved with the University College of North Wales, founded in 1884, in the promotion of Bangor as a site for the college and in the early years after its establishment. He also acted as agent for the Penrhyn estate, Bangor, the family seat of the Douglas Pennant family, which had extensive interests in the north Wales slate mining industry and in the West Indies.
