Alexander Shanks was born on 2 June 1910 and was an arts student at the University of Glasgow , Scotland from 1930-1934 . He graduated MA with Honours in English and Philosophy, in 1934 and went on to become a teacher.

The collection also holds some of the papers of Alexander Shanks's wife, Flora McDonald MacFarlane who was an arts student at the University of Glasgow from 1930-1934 . She graduated MA in 1934.
