Soldier in the 27th Michigan Infantry during the Civil War.

Samuel K.Gates, son of Samuel and Ann (Down) Gates, was born Nov. 30, 1822, in Fabius, Onondaga Co., N.Y. In 1948 married Clarissa C. Whiting and removed to Battle Creek,Mich. where he was a teacher and farmer. In 1864 enlisted in the Michigan Sharpshooters, was taken prisoner at Battle of the Wilderness. Later, owing to ill health was transferred to St. Mary's Hospital, Detroit, where he held an important clerkship until mustered out of service. He became a lawyer and lived in Portland, Mich. until his death, Dec. 7,1889. (from Florence S. Whelan) (blue index cards)
