Barnard was a dancer, costume designer and theater dresser. He grew up in Columbus, Ohio. He moved to San Francisco in 1964. A year later, the San Francisco Ballet paid him to dance and design costumes, and in 1966, Barnard joined the wardrobe department of the San Francisco Opera. He toured frequently with the dance company he founded, No Theater, until the mid-seventies. Barnard was the dresser for the Opera for 35 years and also worked as wardrobe master for the touring company of "A Chorus Line."
